Belgium is home to the European Parliament and the headquarters of NATO, with it’s capital city, Brussels and it’s examples of magnificent medieval architecture connected by a dense circuit of cobblestone streets, providing the perfect backdrop.
The grandness doesn’t stop there. It is spread countrywide, no more so than in Bruges where traveling there feels like a step back in time. The city centre is a reflection of when Bruges was one of the richest cities in the world and the town houses some of Belgium’s finest art collections.
Belgium is a country with grand traditions in painting, beer and, of course, chocolate. It is said that there are more varieties of beer in Belgium than there are plants and animals and the luxurious chocolate recipes are world renowned.
The north of Belgium, sharing a border with the Netherlands, is predominantly flat and many travelers rent bicycles, taking full advantage of the dedicated cycle lanes to keep them separate from cars. The south of the country is dominated by the Ardennes and it’s picturesque rolling landscapes. The town of Namur is an excellent place to begin any exploration of this region and there are many transport options available.
Travel to Belgium is easy via the two international airports Brussels Airport and Antwerp Airport. Getting around is cheap and simple either by car, bus or rail. However it is advised that you book early given the popularity of Belgium as a tourist destination.
