Cyprus is probably one of the most varied travel destinations in the world. Nine thousand years of invasion has left its mark on this idyllic island. Ancient vineyards, castles from the crusades, monasteries and Roman mosaics all sit next to each other to tell of Cyprus’ history.
Nowadays the country is split in two, the Turkish north and the Greek south. Crossing the ‘Green Line’ will vastly change the experience you have in Cyprus. Religion, food and everything in between changes depending on whether you are north or south of this divide.
Larnaka airport and Pafos airport are the international airports that have flights from most of Europe and the Middle East. Onward travel is limited due to the divisive nature of Cyprus. For example, to travel to Turkey you have to have arrived from there.
Public transport is cheap, however the routes tend to take you round the houses. Public travel also stops on a Sunday but it is very easy to book car rental and driving makes an ideal alternative.
Resorts litter the island and, as a result, there are plenty of opportunities for water sports. Skiing is available on Mount Olympus and throughout the country mountain biking and hiking are extremely popular.
