Denmark
Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries and is made up of the mainland and a small collection of islands. The home of Lego, Vikings and Hans Christian Andersen, the country offers a heady mix of lively cities and rural landscapes.
Sleek, modern design permeates throughout the country, punctuated with the castles and forts of bygone eras. The Danish people are relaxed and tolerant. They strive for a feeling of coziness in all aspects of their lives which, given high levels of rainfall and dark winters, is understandable and gives rise the Danish fondness for small bars and cafes.
Most international flights land in Copenhagen airport. A few from other Scandinavian countries and the UK fly to the more regional airports of Aarhus airport, Aalborg airport, Esbjerg airport and Billund airport. Domestic flights are limited and a car hire booking will almost certainly increase your ease of travel around the country. Especially since you can collect your hire car from all the main airports.
Denmark prides itself on being bike friendly and there are plenty of cycle routes for traveler to follow and rental is made easy. Saltwater fishing is also prevalent as well as yachting and, for the braver traveler, swimming along the stretches of shoreline.
The Danish also enjoy a good festival. From the beginning of June where Midsummer Eve bonfires are lit, there are over a hundred music festivals, including Roskilde – northern Europe’s biggest rock festival, incorporating almost any kind of music you can imagine.
